This will be the last update on this website. All the safari photos (about 1,000 photos), family updates, and links to the details and directions to the St. Paul de Vence house will be on the new website. It goes live next week. See you there!

The kids are all healthy and well. Maddie is in her 2nd year as an ENT resident. She is chronically tired (of course). Laura is almost finished with her Master’s degree and close to getting a teaching credential. And Sam, our baby, is in the 2nd year of his M.D./PhD program at Harvard. He recently remarked that medical school wasn’t as hard as he thought it would be, and Maddie, of course, wanted to end him. Other than teasing his sister, he’s happy and well.

News and Updates

We are so proud of this one! After 4 years of hard work, Maddie is an official M.D. We asked what she wanted for graduation, and she said she wanted to do some island hopping in Greece. Done! We will all head to Europe on May 21 - four days in Zurich first, just for fun - and then on to Greece. We will finish the trip in London - also just for fun - and then return home in mid-June. Yay!

Maddie will then start her 5-year residency in July. She got her desired match, but I must say the system seems antiquated and unnecessarily stressful for applicants. I saw several people break down when they learned – without any right of appeal – that they were going to some distant place that was ranked at the bottom of their list. The administrators actually brag that the match system has been in place since 1952. It’s time to rethink that system.

Sam’s journey was equally interesting. His medical school applications (and the seemingly endless interviews) took even more time than Maddie's applications (probably due to the PhD part, along with the new DEI requirements). It was a surprisingly long process, but it worked in the end. He was accepted for MD/PhD at most of the top medical schools. Ultimately, though, the Boston schools seemed the best fit for Sam’s research goals. Proud of you Sam!
